Sacramento Republic win debut match in USL eCup FIFA20

Good start for Rafael Diaz and Sac Republic.

MLS: 2017 Portraits USA TODAY Sports

Sacramento Republic FC made their debut in the new USL eCup FIFA20 gaming competition on Monday, and won their opening match by a 3-1 scoreline.

SRFC goalkeeper Rafael Diaz was on the sticks for Sacramento, and he took on Memphis 901 midfielder Duane Muckette. The tournament is an international one (USL teams aren’t currently in FIFA), so Diaz/Sacramento played as Mexico and Muckette/Memphis as Austria, as both teams will do throughout the competition.

Diaz took the lead 10 minutes after halftime with a converted penalty, before Muckette tied it up in the 73rd minute. But Sacramento couldn’t be stopped, with Diaz scoring the winner in the 75th minute before adding an insurance tally in the 83rd minute.

Here’s the highlight of Republic FC’s third goal:

The first week of the USL eCup FIFA20 tournament is a bracket tournament to determine placement in one of three divisions, similar to Nations League, and due to their win Sacramento will advance in the bracket. They take on OKC Energy FC, playing as Portugal, Wednesday at 5:30 pm PT. Diaz said on the broadcast that defender Ash Apollon will play for Sac Republic in that match. You can check it out on Sacramento Republic’s Twitch channel.

You can watch all of Diaz’s match against Memphis below if you missed it.

Should be interesting. Best of luck to SRFC on Wednesday and throughout! We’ll keep you posted on their progress.
