Embarrassing. Disappointing. Disaster. Worst performance ever. Take your pick, they're all applicable.

Sacramento Republic FC saw their US Open Cup run come to a disappointing end in front of a sparse Wednesday night crowd at Bonney Field. A flurry of second half goals from the visiting Kitsap Pumas earned them a 3-1 victory and handed the Republic -- who never really looked like winning -- a crushing defeat in the process.

The Republic had a great chance to open the scoring early in the 5th minute, but Cameron Iwasa's shot from an Emrah Klimenta cross went wide of the target.

While the home side got the first real chance of the match, by and large it was the visitors who were making things happen. The Pumas displayed more energy going forward, crisper passing, and just generally looked like the better of the two teams.

Kitsap had an opportunity of their own in the 7th minute, but the open header went right into the awaiting hands of Evan Newton.

The best chance of the first half came from Kitsap in the 29th minute with a well worked bit of passing set up Hamza Haddadi for a shot towards the corner of the net, forcing a diving save from Evan Newton.

The first half ended with a whimper as both teams went into the locker rooms scoreless and not having had any particularly amazing opportunities to score.

The Story at Halftime

Sacramento Republic FC stats: 0 goals, 0 assists, 7 fouls, 1 corner, 0 offiside, 3 saves, 5 shots, 1 shot on goal.

Kitsap Pumas stats: 0 goals, 0 assists, 8 fouls, 2 corners, 1 offiside, 1 saves, 4 shots, 3 shot on goal.

Paul Buckle made two substitutions at halftime. Harry Williams came on for Thomas Stewart and James Kiffe came on for Joaquin Rivas.

The Republic started off the second half better than they ended the first, putting the visitors under pressure immediately with a Harry Williams shot less than a minute in.

However, despite the early push, the Republic did not hold the momentum for long and the pendulum had swung back to the visitors by the 50th minute.

Kitsap were the first to get on the scoresheet with a goal from Javier Castro in the 60th minute.

The Republic were quick to respond, getting the equalizer a minute later from a close range goal from Cameron Iwasa. Iwasa took advantage of some chaos in the box and pounced on a loose ball.

Not to be outdone, Pumas forward Mike Ramos scored in the 63rd minute to cement the lead. Republic keeper Newton made a save on the initial shot but was unable to make the catch and Ramos put in the rebound.

That lead was extended just a short time later by Javier Castro in the 65th minute, putting the Republic with a deep hole to climb out of.

The flurry of goals seemed to awaken the Republic from their apparent slumber and the suddenly came at the compact Pumas defense with a furious energy that would have been nice to see earlier. James Kiffe was particularly involved in the Republic's late push, routinely taking on --and beating-- multiple Pumas players at once trying to create some opportunities.

Two such opportunities came in the 84th minute. Daniel Trickett-Smith had a chance from the middle of the penalty area that was sent out for a corner kick. Then, after the ensuing corner, Harry Williams nearly got a goal after deflecting Octavio Guzman's shot.

However, despite the urgency of their final push, the Republic were unable to draw within one goal, much less find an equalizer to force extra time. When the final whistle blew, the Pumas players ran out onto the field to celebrate their upset and the Republic fans who had not already left the match began the slow walk to the parking lot.

In 2014 and 2015, Sacramento Republic's runs in the US Open Cup ended in disappointing but hard fought losses. This time around it was just disappointing.

Starting Lineups and Final Stats

Sacramento Republic FC Starting XI: Evan Newton; Joaquin Rivas (Out 45, Mike da Fonte, Chris Christian, Emrah Klimenta; Danny Barrera, Alfonso Motagalvan, Agustin Cazarez, Octavio Guzman; Thomas Stewart (Out 45), Cameron Iwasa

Sacramento Republic FC Bench: Dominik Jakubek, Harry Williams, Max Alvarez, Daniel Trickett-Smith, Mackenzie Pridham, James Kiffe, Chase Minter.

Republic return to US Open Cup action tomorrow against the Kitsap Pumas.

Sacramento Republic FC return to US Open Cup action tomorrow when they host the PDL's Kitap Pumas at Bonney Field in the third round of the historic tournament. On the line is a fourth round match against four-time tournament winners, MLS's Seattle Sounders. To get to this point, the Republic handily beat CD Aguiluchos USA 5-0, while the Pumas beat Seattle Sounders U-23s 1-0.

Here are some things to consider ahead of tomorrow's match.

Fixture congestion

While the US Open Cup is usually a fun time for both teams and fans, the additional midweek games it brings to a team's schedule can make this time of year a particularly difficult one. Take the Republic's schedule for May through June, for instance. From May 14 to June 11, a space of 28 days, the Republic are playing a total of 9 games for an average of a game every 3 days. It is the Republic's busiest time of the year and a time when the depth of the roster will be tested.

Player rotation

One way to help deal with all the fixture congestion that the Republic is experiencing is to change up the lineups a bit in order to give some players a rest from playing a full match every few days.

However, Paul Buckle seemed fairly hesitant to change things up too much for tomorrow's game when asked about it after last weekend's tie against Swope Park Rangers.

It's dangerous to chop and change, I've said this before. We finished the opposition well in the last game but it wasn't at our best. It's not an easy call to change it. I don't foresee there being as many changes as last time out if I'm honest at this moment in time.

However, just because Buckle was hesitant last Saturday does not mean that we are not going to see at least some changes. After all, Buckle is not about to broadcast to the Pumas that he will be fielding a rotated and possibly weaker starting XI on Wednesday.

One player in particular who will hopefully benefit from a bit of roster rotation is Max Alvarez. Alvarez is one of the more talented wide midfielders on the Republic's roster and has proven in the past that he can be dangerous in an inverted winger role. Alvarez started in the Republic's last USOC match against CD Aguiluchos USA and was extremely influential in the team's win, notching a pair of assists and scoring a superb free kick goal to round out the 5-0 result.

With all the talent in midfield, Alvarez has had difficulty breaking into the starting XI for league matches. Tomorrow's contest against Kitsap Pumas could be a big chance for him to show that he belongs in the starting XI.

The return of Emrah Klimenta? Not quite yet.

Emrah Klimenta has been away from Sacramento on national team duty with Montenegro and missed a few games in that time. Now, with Sunday's friendly against Turkey having come and gone, the camp is over and Klimenta will soon return to Sacramento with his first international cap under his belt. However, it is not expected that he will be available for tomorrow's US Open Cup match, which means that the Republic will once again be starting a deputy right back.

Right now the choice seems to be Joaquin Rivas, who started there in Saturday's draw with Swope Park Rangers. Despite being listed as a forward and not having much experience in the back line, Rivas has done fairly well filling in for Klimenta and I have no problems with him starting again tomorrow.

We're going streamless.

If you want to catch tomorrow's US Open Cup action, I hope you have either a ticket or a vivid imagination because there is not going to be a stream of the match. There will only be a radio broadcast on Sports 1140 KHTK. In the last USOC match we all were a little lucky in that someone on the CD Aguiluchos USA bench streamed the match from their phone, but it seems unlikely that such a thing will happen again.

It is unfortunate that a competition with so much history as the US Open Cup is not more accessible. These type of matches have been streamed in past years and some fans are understandably frustrated with the lack of streams this year.

Predicted Lineup

Here is a possible starting XI for tomorrow's game.

With Buckle's comments above in mind, it does not seem likely that there will be too many deviations from what could be called a full strength starting lineup. However, two changes that we might see are Max Alvarez at right midfield for the reasons covered above and Carlos Rodriguez, who despite being only 19 has put on some good performances when given a chance.

Tomorrow's match also seems like a good chance for the Republic's two talented youngsters, Harry Williams and Trickett-Smith. The Prince has performed well when given a chance -- so much so that opposing teams seem to have him on a "foul first, ask questions later" policy -- and DTS has shown flashes of greatness and could use the time in US Open Cup to gel with his teammates in order to become a more effective chance creator.

What are your thoughts about tomorrow's match? Any predictions of your own? Sound off in the comments below.

Sacramento Republic FC advance in the U.S. Open Cup

Sacramento Republic FC welcomed CD Aguiluchos USA to Bonney Field on Wednesday night for a second round match of the 2016 U.S. Open Cup. The Republic dominated the lower league club with a flurry of first half goals. Evan Newton got the start at goalkeeper as the Republic finished with their 3rd consecutive shutout, winning 5-0.

CD Aguiluchos threatened early in the 10th minute when Aguiluchos forward Simon Rawnsley broke away from Republic defender Carlos Rodriguez for a shot on goal. Evan Newton charged forward to block the shot and keep the clean sheet streak alive.

Let the Scoring Begin

The Republic's first opportunity to score was when Aguiluchos defender Bengy Ruiz was called for a handball in the penalty box in the 20th minute. Thomas Stewart sent a weak penalty shot that was easily blocked by Aguiluchos goalkeeper Kevin Gonzalez.

The Republic wouldn't be denied a second time as midfielder Alfonso Motagalvan blasted a header to the back of the net in the 24th minute for the Republics first goal. Interestingly -- but mostly sad -- Motagalvan's goal was the Republic's first from a corner kick since September 13, 2014.

The Republic would score again in the 36th minute as forward Mackenzie Pridham slotted the first U.S. Open Cup goal of his career to make it 2-0. Republic defender Carlos Rodriguez would score the Republic's second corner kick goal of the match with a well timed header in the 44th minute. Just a minute later, forward Thomas Stewart would make up for his missed penalty kick and score from top of the penalty box to give the Republic a 4-0 advantage going into the half.

Second Half Slumber

As much as the first half was dominated by the Republic offense, the second half was where the defense shined. CD Aguiluchos put pressure on the Republic back line and had nine shots on goal for the second half. Evan Newton had some miraculous saves and even looked to get injured as he came up limping in the 89th minute after a save.

It wasn't all defense in the second half, though. Midfielder Max Alvarez scored a beautiful free-kick in second half stoppage time to cement the victory 5-0.

The Republic have now won three consecutive U.S. Open Cup matches in the second round. The Republic will now face Kitsap Pumas of the PDL for the third round of the U.S. Open Cup on June 1st.

The U.S. Open Cup returns to Bonney Field this Wednesday.

Sacramento Republic FC will host National Premier Soccer League (NPSL) side CD Aguiluchos USA for Round 2 of the 2016 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup this Wednesday. This marks the third season that the Republic will compete in the 103 year old tournament. The Republic were bounced out of the fourth round the past two seasons by the San Jose Earthquakes.

Getting to Know the Opponent

CD Aguiluchos are an Oakland, CA based club, competing in the Golden Gate Conference of the NPSL. The club began play in 2013 and is named in honor of CD Aguila of the El Salvador premier league. Sacramento soccer fans may be familiar with CD Aguiluchos as they are a frequent rival of Sacramento Gold FC, who also play in the Golden Gate Conference.

The only other appearance in the U.S. Open Cup for CD Aguiluchos was a first round 1-0 defeat in 2014 against the Ventura County Fusion of the Premier Development League (PDL). Last week, CD Aguiluchos defeated San Francisco City FC 3-0 to claim their first ever win in America's oldest soccer tournament.

What to Expect

The Republic should be able to handle CD Aguiluchos this Wednesday, but nothing is for certain in the U.S. Open Cup. This tournament is built for exciting upsets. Just ask the Portland Timbers.

We may see the Republic trot out some new faces for the match who haven't received much playing time this season. New additions such as goalkeeper Evan Newton and midfielder Matt LaGrassa could see some action. Unfortunately, this may not be the case according to coach Paul Buckle.

"I'm not a great lover of changing things", said Buckle after the match last Saturday. "Dominick could probably do with a break...Evan has been fabulous in training...so there might be a change there."

Regardless of who plays or starts, the Republic need to score and score often. The Republic have played well in the second round of the U.S. Open Cup in the past. In 2014, the Republic narrowly defeated the Ventura County Fusion 2-1. The Republic fared better in the 2015 tournament against the Sonoma County Sol. Forward Thomas Stewart scored a hat trick that night to lead the way to a 4-2 victory.

Prediction

The Republic defense has been remarkable this season which should get them past Rounds 2 and 3. If the offense can put together some shots on goal, I predict a 4-0 Republic victory with Stewart scoring a brace.

Please tell us your thoughts and predictions on the Republic's chances in the U.S. Open Cup this season.
