The end of the 2015 USL Regular Season is rapidly approaching and the race to get one of the 6 playoff spots in the Western Conference is intensifying. Sacramento Republic currently sit in 7th place, just one point behind both the 6th place Orange County Blues and the 5th place Tulsa Roughnecks.
Fortunately for the Republic, the Roughnecks have played 26 games, the most in all of USL, while Sacramento have only played 23. Those 3 games in hand give Sacramento an advantage in the final push to the playoffs, as those extra games could potentially let them pass over the Roughnecks and take a their spot in the postseason. The only thing Sacramento has to do is pick up some points in their final 5 games of the season.
Unfortunately, that is where things get a little bit more complicated. The Republic have not done all that good of a job of picking up points recently. They have earned a spectacularly “meh” 5 points in the 4 leagues games since Paul Buckle took over head coaching duties. To make matters worse, 3 of those games have been at home, where the Republic should be expected to win almost every match. Of the remaining 5 games left in the season, 3 are away games, where it will be more difficult to earn points.
One of those away matches will be against Portland Timbers 2, the other team currently outside the playoff picture that could likely fight their way in. T2 are in 8th place with 32 points and have played just 1 more match than Sacramento so far, meaning they also have a few games in hand over Tulsa. T2 and the Republic will likely be vying for the same spot in the postseason, the one currently held by Tulsa Roughnecks.
With all that information laid out, we at ICS want to hear straight from the Republic fanbase how confident they are that their team will make it to the playoffs. The poll is right below, let us know your thoughts.
Don’t think I’ve ever seen a team whimper into the playoffs and win a title. We need to fix our issues quickly if we want to try to make another championship run.

My 2008 Arizona Cardinals came pretty close, but I have to agree.

I still believe it can happen. In the end, I don’t see them clearing the red line by too much. The current trend cannot continue, though. I’d like to see a formation change on Saturday. Didn’t Coach Buckle say his preferred set up is a 4-4-1-1? With Mirkovic missing the next two, maybe now is the time to try something other than the 4-3-3.
