Sacramento Republic got their second win of the Paul Buckle era last Saturday over Tulsa Roughnecks, clawing their way into the USL Playoffs in the process. A late injection of talent in the form of a trio of loan players from the San Jose Earthquakes helped the Republic get the three points.
Tommy Thompson, JJ Koval, and Mark Sherrod all played significant parts in the win over Tulsa, with Thompson being the most prominent of the three loanees. While it would certainly be good for the Republic if the trio stuck around and helped Sacramento with their push to the playoffs, Coach Buckle said after the game that the length of their stay was not set in stone. “It might be a case of them going back and maybe being on the sub bench again and coming back again, which isn’t ideal. But I understand. I mean, [San Jose] is going to be losing players to international duty next week.”
Despite the dominant nature of Sacramento’s play in the win over Tulsa, it was only the team’s second win since Buckle came on board. That, coupled with the uncertainty of the duration of the loanee trio’s loans, makes the Republic’s future success a little uncertain. It is never easy to play on the road, and Sacramento’s next 3 games are all on the road.
With all that information laid out, we at ICS want to hear from the Sacramento Republic fans themselves. It’s safe to say that prior to Saturday’s game the Republic were in a bit of a slump. With the performance against Tulsa, have the defending champs put themselves back on track?
