USL President Jake Edwards said today, during the halftime show of the 2016 USL Cup, that the league will be announcing two 2017 expansion teams next week.

Edwards has said in the past that the league, which has grown significantly since Sacramento Republic FC joined in 2014, will not be finished with expansion any time soon, so the announcement of more clubs for next season is not at all surprising.

Although there is no indication yet of what next week’s announcement will be, recent rumors can give us a good idea of what we might see. Two NASL clubs, the Ottawa Fury and Tampa Bay Rowdies, have been said to be looking at joining USL.

Rumors of Ottawa ditching NASL to hook up with USL have been around since last month, and the Tampa to USL talk recently got a big boost when the Rowdies owner Bill Edwards was spotted with USL Executives.

Whatever next week’s expansion announcement includes, you can be sure that we’ll be covering here on ICS!
