Sacramento Republic FC announced yesterday that they have agreed to a contract for defender Peter McGlynn for the 2017 season. McGlynn was a 2013 supplemental draft pick for the San Jose Earthquakes and most recently finished a stint with Longford Town FC of the Irish Premier Division. Originally from Dublin Ireland, McGlynn does have experience playing in the U.S. and California.

McGlynn will see some familiar faces with Republic as he joins his former UC Santa Barbara teammates Danny Barrera and James Kiffe (if he returns for 2017) in the backfield. During his time at UC Santa Barbara, McGlynn competed in 76 matches, notching two goals and six assists. McGlynn’s professional resume includes six goals in 47 appearances in the Irish Premier Division for Drogheda United FC, Bray Wanderers FC and Longford Town FC.

According to the Republic, McGlynn is regarded as a utility player that can produce at defender, midfielder and can be involved in the attack. According to head coach Paul Buckle:

“Peter is super-versatile and is someone that will fight to find his spot on the team, he is someone that Graham brought into training last season and I could see straight away why he was there. He has a lot of good attributes as a defender and as an attacker. He can play anywhere across the back four or in the midfield, and has all the qualities that we look for in a player."
