Last week, it was announced that Bonney Field would host a December 29th friendly between Liga MX clubs Leon and Monarcas Morelia. However, the organizer of the match, Latin Entertainment, Inc., has announced that the friendly has been canceled for undisclosed reasons. In its place, Monarcas Morelia will now be facing off against fellow Liga MX club Atlas FC at Bonney Field a day later on December 30th.
The friendly against Morelia won’t be Atlas FC’s first visit to the City of Trees. The Guadalajara-based club has previously faced off against Republic FC in 2014 and 2015, winning both friendlies by scorelines of 1-2 and 1-4, respectively.
Atlas is currently captained by Mexican National Team veteran and USMNT nemesis Rafael Marquez. The former FC Barcelona defender recently scored an 89th minute winner against the U.S. in their World Cup Qualifier last month, giving Mexico a 2-1 victory over their American counterparts and finally killing the infamous Dos-a-Cero albatross that hung around Mexico’s neck.
On the other end of the field, Monarcas (“Monarchs”) Morelia, have one Liga MX championship in the club’s 92-year history, but failed to make the playoffs this season and will be in the battle to avoid relegation for the first time since they won promotion to the first division in 1981.
Latin Entertainment, Inc. previously organized the October 5th friendly between Republic FC and Chivas, which ended 1-1.
