Sacramento Republic Signs Matt Wiesenfarth

Sac Republic, in desperate need of midfielders, signs another forward

Sacramento Republic has agreed to terms with standout Burlingame Dragons FC Forward Matt Wiesenfarth.

Wiesenfarth is a local standout who has played for Jesuit High School and the UC Davis Aggies. He has so far spent the year 2017 with the Sacramento Gold (6 games) and Burlingame Dragons FC (11 games) and has stood out with both clubs.

As a member of the Sacramento Gold, Wiesenfarth only played in 6 out of 12 regular season games but was still able to lead the team in goals with 9 including 2 hat tricks. In fact, in his first match of the season with the Gold, he showed his versatility by racking up 2 assists by making a couple impressive crosses. In April, Wiesenfarth was named the National Premiere Soccer League (NPSL) National Player of the Week after scoring a hat trick in the first half. Even more impressive, after playing in limited games, the young forward was rewarded as Best XI in the NPSL's Golden Gate Conference by Midfield Press.

While playing for Burlingame, Wiesenfarth scored an impressive 13 goals in just 11 games while only attempting 27 shots (48% conversion rate). His limited minutes ultimately hurt him as far as receiving awards, but despite his lack of playing time, Wiesenfarth was still able to receive an honorable mention as a part of the 2017 PDL All-Western Conference Team after scoring at a rate of 1.18 goals per game.

We are delighted to bring Matt on board for the final part of the season. He is someone that we brought in on a trial basis and has consistently improved each time out on the training pitch. He is hard-working, honest and has a knack for finding the back of the net. We look forward to seeing more from him.

- Republic FC Head Coach and Technical Director Paul Buckle

Wiesenfarth adds a dimension on the offensive side of the ball Sacramento Republic desperately needs. His ability to score and finish at a high rate is something California’s capital would like to see on their squad considering the team is 6th in shots attempted (272) but tied for 22nd in conversion rate (13%). Hopefully Wiesenfarth’s ability to score translates into the USL.

Additional News:

Sacramento Republic has also released defender Enrique Montano.

Reportedly the separation is considered mutual between the team and player. Montano played in 135 minutes and appeared only twice in 2017 matches (none were USL). His lack of opportunity is a clear indicator of why he wanted to leave.
