Let me say from the outset that I am not a huge power rankings type of guy. It really doesn’t matter which sport either. I suppose they’re kind of fun to occasionally check out to see if you’re team is climbing the chart or falling, but it’s something that I largely ignore.
However, when the USL Power Rankings for Week 3 were released earlier today, I decided to check it out, and was surprised to see Republic FC ranked seventh. Only seventh I thought?
We ARE talking about a Republic side (2-1-0) that dominated San Antonio FC opening weekend, only then to hit the road and knock off Orange County SC and tie Rio Grande Valley Toros FC last Saturday in dramatic fashion down two goals late?
Look, I am not going to criticize the power rankings. There are a lot of factors that go into it and it’s not easy. I am actually really glad I don’t have to do it.
But when teams like Louisville City FC (ranked one) haven’t played a road game yet and their two wins were against Nashville SC (1-1-1) and Bethlehem Steel FC (1-0-2), it makes you scratch your head.
Similarly, the team ahead of Republic FC, Charleston Battery (ranked sixth) haven’t played a road game either and won’t until Saturday. Again, their wins are against two teams at the bottom of the eastern conference table — Ottawa Fury FC (0-0-1) and Toronto FC II (0-0-2).
Of course, I am biased and think Sacramento should be much higher in the rankings. Maybe they’re getting dinged for playing mostly lackluster these last two matches? Either way, they found a way to secure four points out of six possible on the road.
