Sacramento Republic FC returned to the road Saturday night against San Antonio FC, and while the Republic got the better of San Antonio on opening night back in March with a 2-1 win, it was San Antonio that returned the favor tonight with a 1-0 victory. With the loss, Republic FC move to 8-5-4 (28 points), while San Antonio move to 6-3-5 (23 points).

Republic Manager Simon Elliott would fill out his lineup card as follows:

San Antonio would get on the board in the 43rd minute on a counter attack by San Antonio. Midfielder Ethan Bryant delivered a beautiful ball forward to a streaking Cesar Elizondo who gathered it and calmly slotted it past the outstretched arms of Josh Cohen.

Republic FC would come out on the front foot in the second half, and had several incredible opportunities, but San Antonio keeper Diego Restrepo showed why he’s one of the best in the league. First he denied Jure Matjašič in the 56th, Villyan Bijev in the 67th minute, and Cameron Iwasa from point-blank range in the 70th minute. Either three of the saves are Save of the Week contenders — especially the saves in the 56th and 70th.

Although the Quails had numerous opportunities and completely dominated the second half, they were unable to equalize. The result was a bit unfortunate, because they were clearly the stronger side in the second half.

Despite winning Wednesday at Fresno, Republic have now dropped two of their last three on the road. In their defense, it has been a difficult stretch of games both in terms of the number of games played and quality of their opponents.

Republic return to the pitch on Wednesday, June 20 when they face LAFC in the Round of 16 of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup competition. Their next USL match is scheduled for Saturday, June 23 when they will host St. Louis FC.
