The United Soccer League (USL) announced today that Sacramento Republic FC forward Cameron Iwasa had been named Player of the Week (and to the Team of the Week) for Week 18. Iwasa received 39 percent of the vote from a national panel of independent media representing each USL market.
Iwasa shined last week, particularly in the match against Swope Park Rangers recording his second brace of the season and adding an assist on the Republic’s third goal. It was also a record-breaking night for Iwasa who passed Rodrigo Lopez on the Republic’s all-time list with 21 USL goals.
This marks the second time in Iwasa’s career that he’s been named USL Player of the Week and fifth time he’s been named to the USL Team of the Week.
Additionally, Republic FC defender Shannon Gomez was named to Team of the Week for his outstanding play. He has really been outstanding all season, but really solid late. As pointed out by Indomitable City Soccer contributor Matthew Weber, his move to left back is one of the key reasons why the Republic reeled off two road wins last week. The back line has been better too, and Gomez is a big reason for that.
Congratulations to both Iwasa and Gomez on their much-deserved accomplishments.
