Match Preview: Fresno FC versus Sacramento Republic FC

Saturday starts an important stretch for Republic FC

Kiel Maddox/Fresno FC

Fresh off a bye week, Sacramento Republic FC face Fresno FC Saturday night at Papa Murphy’s Park, in what is an important match for both sides, but especially for the boys in red.

As argued earlier this week, how the Republic fare in August against four opponents (out of five) that are outside the playoff race, will decide the fate of their season.

Below are three keys to the Republic securing three points at home on Saturday:

  • It’s been said before, but it’s worth repeating. The Republic need to start fast and keep the pressure on for a full 90 minutes. We’re at the point of the season where the club can’t drop points at home — especially late.
  • I’m guessing that Fresno will try to neutralize Cameron Iwasa and force someone else for the Republic to step up and beat them. Republic manager Simon Elliott is looking for (and needs) someone else to rise up. Who will it be?
  • Fresno is solid all around the pitch. Led by forward Jemal Johnson (eight goals), midfielder Juan Pablo Caffa (seven goals, three assists) and defender Ramon Martin Del Campo, it’s no surprise Fresno is surging forward. The Quails will need to find a way to limit Johnson and Caffa and stifle their speed and attack.

Fresno is coming into the match on a nice run. They are unbeaten in their last five, with their last loss coming at Real Monarchs on June 26. The bottom line is this. Republic are going to have to be solid on both sides of the field to come away with three points.
