The first of our end-of-season awards is in the books, and we have a winner for the Sacramento Republic 2020 Defender of the Year. Drumroll please...
Hayden Sargis won Indomitable City Soccer’s Defender of the Year award, decided by you, the readers, as he won the vote in a landslide, taking 79 percent of the votes overall. Jordan McCrary finished second with 12 percent.
The 18-year-old, signed to a professional deal in the offseason out of Sac Republic’s academy, made 15 appearances on the season, starting 14 of those. Sargis led the team in minutes played in 2020, with 1,237, an impressive endorsement of his abilities in his rookie season in the USL Championship.
Able to hold his own in a difficult position for youngsters to adjust to at the professional level, Sargis’ status as a fixture in the lineup bodes well for a possible future playing in MLS, possibly with Sacramento Republic, or perhaps a move abroad one day.
Congratulations to Hayden for the award, and keep up the good work!
