Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC announced this week they have signed defender Matt Mahoney. The player most recently played the last two seasons at Sacramento Republic FC, where he played 32 games.
At Colorado Springs, Mahoney will be reunited with Brendan Burke, his coach at his club prior to Republic FC, Bethlehem Steel.
Sacramento Republic, of course, decided to part ways with Mahoney in the offseason. He got playing time, both as a starter and off the bench, and could play across the backline, but it appeared he was not going to be a primary option under head coach Mark Briggs.
So I think this is a good move for Mahoney. He’ll likely be in line for more time as a starter in Colorado Springs, and with that club building a new stadium expected to open next season and the club stepping up their game in terms of signings this offseason, if Sac Republic get to play outside a West Coast regional group next year, don’t be surprised if Switchbacks FC are a player in the Western Conference again. Good luck to Matt (except when playing Sacramento)!
