The date is July 14, 2015. Sacramento Republic FC are hosting their latest international history in club history, and this one is a little different.
The opponent is Sunderland, who went on to star in a documentary series chronicling how terrible they are, but at this time they were perpetually fighting relegation in the Premier League and winning that battle. They featured some stars in this game, including Jermain Defoe.
The end result was a 1-0 Sac Republic win, with Cameron Iwasa’s goal just before the hour mark making the difference on the night, as Sacramento won their first international friendly and their first win over a Premier League outfit to boot.
Here’s the highlights from the clash...
...but guess what, the entire game is also available to watch, too!
Yes, there are a few caveats worth noting in here: Republic FC were in the middle of their season, while Sunderland were in preseason, it’s a friendly, so take it with a grain of salt, Sacramento probably wanted a result more than their opponent on the night, etc.
Still, it’s pretty impressive to see this result, the kind of thing you look back and nod with a little smile. At a time when we’re looking through the archives to see interesting moments, this is one of those smaller but still interesting ones. Remember when Sacramento Republic beat a Premier League team? Remember, indeed.
