Time for an update on Sacramento Republic’s progress in the USL eCup FIFA 2020 edition tournament, the six-week eUSL competition taking place among some USL Championship and USL League One clubs.
Last week went poorly for Republic FC, as they were beaten 3-0 by Union Omaha in the opening game in Division A play, meaning their stay in the top division was brief, and in addition to being relegated, had no more games for the rest of the week.
This week, back in Division B, they found their footing again. Club fan Justin Sterk came through clutch on Wednesday, guiding Mexico to a wild 4-3 win over Indy Eleven, playing as the Ivory Coast to advance to the semifinal. That win also clinched promotion back up to Division A next week for Sacramento.
On Thursday in the semifinal, goalkeeper Rafael Diaz was blanked in a tight 1-0 loss to El Paso Locomotive, represented by French striker Alexy Bosetti, playing as Argentina. I’m going to be real, there’s a longstanding bogeyteam for Mexico and it’s Argentina, so it seems that form follows in FIFA play, too.
So no weekly crown for Sac Republic in the competition but they’ll get another chance to impress in the highest level next week. We’ll keep you posted on their progress, and as always, you can watch the team’s matches in the tournament on the Sacramento Republic Twitch channel.
