It’s a momentous day, as NWSL commissioner Lisa Baird announced Tuesday during a conference call with reporters that Sacramento will enter the league as an expansion team for the 2022 season.
The news is so fresh neither the league or the club — presumably including Sacramento Republic FC — have put out a formal release on the news just yet, but the commissioner confirming it publicly would seem to dry the ink on the process.
Sacramento have been rumored to be in line for an expansion team in the women’s professional top flight in the United States since the fall of 2019. While the rumors persisted, off and on, for over a year, the news appears to be official and fans of women’s soccer in Northern California can rejoice.
With Sacramento tabbed to enter the league in 2022, they will join another California expansion club, Los Angeles-based Angel City FC, entering the league that year. It’s great news to see not just one, but two teams in California finally join the league after nearly a decade of waiting.
We’ll have more coverage to come, but for now, this is fantastic news and get ready for 2022!
