Sacramento Republic signs midfielder Luis Felipe

At a great age and with some MLS experience, too.

Sacramento Republic FC announced Friday they have signed midfielder Luis Felipe ahead of the 2021 season.

The 25-year-old joins Sac Republic after three seasons with the San Jose Earthquakes.

“Luis Felipe adds another leader with a winning mentality to our midfield. He is a physical presence that can break up plays, which will help us manage and control games the way we want to in 2021,” said Republic FC General Manager Todd Dunivant in a team statement. “He is a great addition to our locker room and will have a major impact on both sides of the ball.”

Luis Felipe was born in New York but received his youth soccer training in Brazil. He returned to the U.S. to embark on his pro career, featuring for the Fort Lauderdale Strikers in 2016 in the NASL. In 2017, he moved to the USL to play for Reno 1868, before impressing the Earthquakes and signing an MLS deal in 2018.

In the end, Luis Felipe was a squad player for San Jose, and only played a handful of times the last two seasons under Matias Almeyda. Having said that, the lanky midfielder has been successful in the second division before and I think he can fit into Sac Republic’s squad in short order, and can show his best in 2021.

Sac Republic’s squad appears to be up to 20 players for the new season, and I think they may only make another signing or three at this point. We’ll keep you posted on roster news as we learn more.
