Drew Skundrich signs with Loudoun United

Midfielder stays in league but moves to be with spouse.

If you were wondering where Drew Skundrich was going to turn up in 2021 after he left Sacramento Republic, we got the word Tuesday, with the midfielder’s signing with USL Championship side Loudoun United announced.

Loudoun is, of course, the reserve side of D.C. United. The move just might give Skundrich an opportunity to train with the MLS side, and perhaps an opportunity to sign with the top flight side at some point.

The location is also ideal for Skundrich for personal reasons, because his wife, Andi Sullivan, plays for the NWSL’s Washington Spirit. The pair’s teams will share the same venue this season.

I still think Skundrich deserves a legitimate look in MLS and I hope he gets it. But while losing him is not great for Sac Republic, I understand the personal motivations for wanting to be with his partner. Too bad Sacramento’s NWSL team wasn’t here a year earlier to try and entice Sullivan, a star in her own right, out west. Alas, that’s not to be, for now. We’ll see what the future brings, but best of luck to Drew in the DMV.
