Good result with season approaching.

Sacramento Republic FC continued their preseason preparation on Saturday, facing Oakland Roots in a scrimmage and beating their new USL Championship rival 5-1 in Sacramento.

Jaime Villarreal scored a brace for Sacramento, with additional goals provided by Cameron Iwasa, Tucker Bone and a penalty by Dariusz Formella.

The game was 90 minutes, with the start of Sac Republic’s season just a couple weeks away, but they used unlimited subs to get players minutes.

“Preseason is all about progress and building — to eventually pull it all together and be ready for the season. Still lots of work to get done on the training ground, but I am seeing progress each week, which is what it’s all about,” said Republic FC head coach Mark Briggs, when asked about the game.

SRFC have one more preseason tune-up scheduled, next Saturday when they host Real Monarchs. That game will be open to a limited number of the public, so it will be some fans’ first chance to see the team in action in person in over a year. And then...the season is scheduled to kick off Apr. 30 at LA Galaxy II. That’s right, the season is nearly here!
