Sacramento Republic FC continue a season of big games when they take on Phoenix Rising FC at Heart Health Park on Saturday, the teams’ first meeting of the 2021 season.
Sac Republic are coming off their first loss of the season, a narrow 1-0 defeat at Orange County SC last weekend. But they’ll look to turn the page and pick up a big win, against Phoenix, who for now remain the class of a competitive Pacific Division.
Phoenix are not undefeated, as they lost to the Tampa Bay Rowdies a couple weeks back, but they’ve sandwiched that with huge wins to open the season, most recently a 5-1 romp over Las Vegas Lights FC, in which they tallied a record number of shots. Perhaps heading back on the road will throw them off their game a bit, and I don’t think they are absolutely unbeatable, but Sacramento need to play their best or they could let Phoenix just waltz to victory.
Maalique Foster (groin) remains out for Sac Republic, while goalkeeper Zac Lubin (back) is out for Phoenix Rising. Otherwise, expect these teams to roll with strong lineups and this one should be a very big game! Given both of these teams fancy themselves contenders for the title this season and won’t back down from a challenge, this is a very good early-season test for both sides, frankly. Obviously Republic FC will hope they emerge with three points and some bragging rights.
