Sacramento Republic now have games in hand

Can they make up ground in the Pacific Division with them?

While we’re waiting for Sacramento Republic FC to get back in action and start playing games again, following a mini-bye and then a game postponement because of a terrible field, one of the possible upsides is now they’ve got some games in hand on the competition.

In fact, after Wednesday’s games, Sacramento will either be level or have games in hand on all the teams in the Pacific Division except for Oakland Roots, who’ve only played four games so far this season, In contrast, Sacramento’s seven games played is fewer than everyone else except Tacoma Defiance, who will be level in games after their game on Wednesday.

The upside is if Sacramento finally get their season in gear and get out of the rut they’ve been in lately, they have ground to make up pretty easily. In addition to most of the games from here on out being six-pointers, Republic FC can also pick up points and jump spots in the standings if they get some wins moving forward.

That means there is more room to make up some ground, which is good. Again, Sac Republic aren’t yet out of the playoff picture, but before Wednesday’s games, they are four points behind the final playoff spot at present. So they do have ground to make up, to be sure.

And of course, they also have to get wins moving forward. None of this talk of games in hand really means much if the team doesn’t get wins at a pretty rapid clip. That will hopefully start on Saturday, when Sac Republic host division leader Phoenix Rising FC.
