As we are all aware by now, Sacramento Republic FC clinched a spot in the USl Playoffs on Sunday with their win over Vancouver Whitecaps FC 2. With that guarantee of postseason action, the question now turns to whether or not Sacramento will be hosting any playoff matches, or if they will be forced to Harrisburg City Islanders their way to the final and play the part of postseason road warriors.
With the Western Conference table so close at the top — only two points separate the 5th placed Republic from the 1st placed OKC Energy — there is still room of a lot of movement before the end of the regular season. Three current playoff teams: Sacramento Republic, Colorado Springs Switchbacks, and Orange County Blues have three matches left to play in the regular season, giving them a slight advantage over OKC Energy and LA Galaxy II, who both have two games left. One more game means one more opportunity to pick up points and move up in playoff seeding.
Sacramento’s three remaining matches are against Portland Timbers 2, Orange County Blues, and Arizona United. While the most important of the three is undoubtedly the match against fellow playoff team OC Blues, the Republic will want to get as many points as possible against T2 and Arizona, who are both in position to play spoiler.
On the topic of spoiler, Republic fans may want to keep an eye on Autin Aztex in the final stretch to the playoffs. The Aztex play both Colorado Springs and Seattle Sounders 2 for their next two matches. The former is already in the playoffs and the latter is still in the hunt for the final spot, so the possibility of Austin taking points from both teams is surely appealing to those in Sacramento.
To grossly over-simplify things, the Republic will be looking to get as many points as possible, while at the same time hoping that all the other playoff teams suddenly try as hard as they can to break the USL record for most draws in a season.
With all that information laid out for consideration, we at ICS want to put the question of Sacramento’s final position to you, the fans. Where do you see the Republic ending the regular season? Will they be regular season champions, get home field advantage, or have to take on the role of Road Warrior? Let us know in the poll below.
