Three second half tallies by NPSL side CD Aguiluchos USA saw them past US Club Soccer representative San Francisco City FC 3-0 in the first round of the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup. This result is the first win for Aguiluchos in the US Open Cup tournament proper having lost their previous and lone appearance back in 2014 2-1 to Ventura County Fusion.
Sacramento will look to advance further in its third participation of the tournament, having met its demise in the third round of the past two editions. Their lone matchup against NPSL teams in the tournament occurred last year and resulted in a 4-2 victory for Republic over Sonoma County Sol.
So far this season Aguiluchos sit second in NPSL's Golden Gate Conference in the West Region. With 8 points out of a possible 15, Aguiluchos are second to a different Sacramento based club in the Sacramento Gold. Republic FC, on the other hand, have had it rough in the scoring department, yet sit fourth in the USL Western Conference. Their game with Aguiluchos will be the second of two matches in five days. Although both matches will occur at Bonney Field.
Will Sacramento continue its usually steady trajectory in the USOC next Wednesday? Or will they become one of the stepping stones to the next USOC Cinderella story? Let us know what you think in the comments!
