Sacramento Republic FC announced today it had picked up the contract options for Juan Barahona, Matt Mahoney and Dariusz Formella. Additionally, the Republic also announced it had declined contract options on Elliott Hord, Charalampos “Haris” Chantzopoulos, Ray Saari and Hayden Partain.
No big surprise on today’s announcement. Of the players let go, Chantzopoulos, Saari and Partain had all fallen out of the rotation. Hord, a fan favorite, and such a key player for the Republic for years, was on loan with Hartford Athletic since August. I suppose of the three players retained, Barahona is the one that stands out most. Mahoney and Formella (both only 24 years-old) still have upside and had their moments this season, but not corner pieces to the roster in my opinion.
In the press release, Republic FC General Manager Todd Dunivant made it clear that building out the roster for next year will be about now and the future.
“Our roster in 2020 will be designed to compete for a USL championship while also developing players for 2022 and beyond,” said Dunivant. “With this strong foundation, we will continue to enhance our roster for the upcoming season.”
Additional roster announcements will be made throughout December. Who would you like to see the Quails retain or bring in? Sound off in the comments section below!
