Cameron Iwasa and Stefano Bonomo named to USL Championship Team of the Week

Iwasa and Bonomo both record a brace in 6-0 rout of Tulsa

The USL Championship League announced yesterday the Team of the Week, and Sacramento Republic FC forwards Cameron Iwasa and Stefano Bonomo were among eleven players recognized for their outstanding play.

As fans know, Iwasa and Bonomo both recorded a brace in a 6-0 rout of Tulsa Roughnecks FC. It was Iwasa’s second brace of the season and Bonomo’s first of the year and as a member of the Republic. It was also Bonomo’s first USL goal — his first goal you might recall came in dramatic fashion in extra time against Fresno FC in Open Cup play.

Iwasa continues to do his thing and is on pace to beat the club record he set last year of 17 goals in a season. With his two goals Saturday, he is now tied for fifth in the USL with nine goals (interestingly tied with former Republic forward Adam Jahn now with Phoenix Rising FC) and is only two off the pace of Kevaughn Frater from New Mexico United (11 goals).

They are not going to get this type of production each night from Iwasa and Bonomo, but it’s an encouraging sign nonetheless. Especially from Bonomo who struggled a bit to find his way early on in the season, but clearly his run of play of late is painting a different story.

The club is finally healthy too, and they seem like a different team since the Open Cup win May 29. Can they keep it going and continue their rise up the table? We’ll find out Saturday when they travel to Reno in what will be a difficult test for the club.
