Good Day Sacramento had an interview with Sacramento Republic FC head coach Mark Briggs on Thursday and it was pretty interesting. The most interesting fact revealed? Briggs won’t wear a polo shirt on the SRFC sideline.
“You won’t see me in a polo,” Briggs said and when asked why not, responded “I wore a polo a couple of times in my coaching career and it’s never been successful. And now I’ve decided against polos.”
So that’s that. A superstition is afoot. Will he wear a suit? A short-sleeved dress shirt? A cover-all track jacket? Time will tell on the coaching sartorial front.
Other news for this Friday:
- Open tryouts this weekend: Briggs also mentioned in the above interview that open tryouts are taking place this weekend for SRFC. If you think you have what it takes and you’re over 18, tryouts will be held at Consumnes River College Stadium. You can get more info here.

- Saint Louis FC example of what might have been for Republic FC: Jeff Rueter has been killing it with USL Championship coverage at The Athletic lately, and he has an intriguing story about Saint Louis FC, who are not connected to the MLS expansion team for St. Louis. A scary example of what could have been for Sacramento, but Republic fortunately will be spared this lame duck fate.
- Another preseason date: Our friends at RSL Soapbox reported that Real Monarchs will face Sac Republic in a preseason game at Papa Murphy’s Stadium on Feb. 29, a week before the start of the 2020 USL Championship season. Put it on your calendar!
Today’s question: What should Coach Briggs wear on the sideline in 2020? Let’s chat in the comments below!
