Get a peek at Mark Briggs’ process in Sacramento Republic training

A nice window into the coach’s approach.

Most videos on social media are short, because most of our attention spans are, too.

But a video lasting almost 10 minutes on Sacramento Republic’s Twitter account this week was worth the time. In it, head coach Mark Briggs is mic’d up as the club goes through a training session in anticipation of the club’s return to action, Monday against Tacoma Defiance.

I’d urge you to watch the video below if you have time, but a few observations I had from it:

  • Briggs is all business to set things up ahead of time and have it as he wants it
  • Then he shoots the breeze with his players as they’re making their way onto the field, keeping it loose
  • No joking when the training is on in earnest! Everyone is locked in
  • During ab and core work, Briggs is relieved he no longer has to do those exercises

There’s nothing revolutionary here, but it is interesting to get a peek of what the process is for Briggs in running Sac Republic training sessions. Of course, the big payoff will come during games, and we’ll see if they’re ready, but it looks like Briggs’ style is to give the players a mix of the bantz with the all-business attitude.
