Sacramento Republic officially clinch spot in 2020 USL Championship playoffs

They didn’t even need to play to do it.

Sacramento Republic FC were on the cusp of clinching a spot in the 2020 USL Championship Playoffs, and they accomplished that feat Thursday without even playing a game, as Reno 1868’s 3-2 win over Tacoma Defiance ensured both Reno and Sacramento will guarantee a top-two finish in Group A and therefore reach the postseason.

The news is certainly welcome but the work is far from over for Sac Republic. They have four games left in the regular season — with a match Sunday at home against Tacoma next on tap — and will be aiming to grab first place in Group A and book a home playoff game in the process. They’ll also be working to enter the postseason in their best form, and while three of the four upcoming games will be against teams not bound for the playoffs this year, sometimes getting a rousing win or two against overmatched opposition will do wonders for a team’s confidence. We’ll see.

But congratulations to Sac Republic for booking their ticket, and now the hard work really begins in the quest for the title.
