The March FIFA international window wrapped up earlier this week with one more game involving a Sacramento Republic player, as forward Kharlton Belmar started and went the distance in a 1-0 win over the U.S. Virgin Islands in 2022 World Cup qualifying on Tuesday.
The goal came in the first half through Saydrel Lewis, and that was all Grenada needed to get the massive three points, which keeps Grenada’s hopes of advancing in World Cup qualifying alive, after Montserrat held Group A favorites El Salvador to a 1-1 tie earlier in the round.
Grenada basically need to win out to have a shot of advancing, but the job is not yet done, and the next qualifiers, in June, give the Spice Boyz plenty to play for. Belmar didn’t score in his first two international matches, but he’s already played his way into the lineup and helped them get a major result, so if he starts the club season well for Sac Republic, it’s easy to imagine he’ll be in the running for another call-up in a few months.
Congrats to Kharlton and welcome home ahead of the new SRFC season.
